Two simple pendulums of identical length are connected
on a suspended wire. If only one of the pendulums is
made to swing, in a short while, the second pendulum
begins moving the same way as the first one. This happens
because with each swing, the first pendulum gives the
second one a small tug. Because they have the same length,
these small tugs happen at the natural frequency of
the first one, and the motion of the second one builds
up quickly. This exhibit gives a simple demonstration
of the concept of natural frequency and the transfer
of energy from one body to another.
Coupled
Pendulum is
available in the "I AM a Scientist" travelling
exhibit package.
