Gyroscopes are intriguing objects because they seem
to defy gravity. This exhibit has a small but heavy
wheel suspended at one end of its axle and is free to
rotate on this suspension. The user holds up the free
end of the axle and gives the wheel a good spin. Upon
letting go, the wheel stays upright, like something
invisible is holding up the axle. Because of this strange
behavior, the user develops interest and appreciation
for several concepts on mechanics like gravity, inertia
and friction.
Gyroscope
is available in the "I AM a Scientist" travelling
exhibit package.
