This is another intriguing exhibit because a straight
metal rod that is free to rotate about a vertical axis
will be made to pass through a curved slot on a panel
blocking its path. It may seem impossible at first but
as the user turns the rod towards the slot on the panel,
it could indeed pass cleanly through. The demonstration
shows the properties of one of the conic sections called
parabola, a shape which the rod traces as it passes
though the slot. The exhibit also encourages the user
to observe the motion of objects in three dimensions.
Hyperbolic
Slot
is available in the "I AM a Scientist" travelling
exhibit package.
