This is an absorbing exhibit that is guaranteed to draw
audiences the moment someone uses it. The Vortex is
a funnel with the cross-sectional shape of a parabola.
A coin is dropped on top and rolls on its edges along
the walls of the funnel. It seems to defy gravity as
it rolls horizontally, tracing a spiral path as it moves
downwards. The coin speeds up to generate centrifugal
force to keep it rolling on the wall. Several coins
can be dropped after another and allowed to race down
the Vortex, to the enjoyment of everyone watching it.
This exhibit demonstrates how forces such as gravity,
friction, and angular momentum interact to make the
coin move this way.
Vortex
is available in the "I AM a Scientist" travelling
exhibit package.
